Long run exploring a new area. Hunua Ranges. Some super brutal climbs starting from sea level and climbing to the highest point in the Auckland region (a not so impressive 680m :P )
But some really nice trails and feeling pretty good!
A bit more brutal today! Out for a bit longer than planned as the trail was a lot more twisty, steep and rugged - and also took a rookie wrong turn :P But really handy time on my feet and enjoyed every minute of it! Also some really fun steep parts which was a lot more like rockclimbing than running ;)
Again took it pretty easy, after taking the wrong turn I got really paranoid and checked the map so much
Nice day in the Dolomites! It is so beautiful! Took it really easy and just enjoyed the scenery :) Brought along my little mascot, wade for a cheeky photo ;)
Absolutely loved it!!!!
Exam escape orienteering race simulation set up in Auckland for the jwoc'ers. Really tricky low-vis area in Woodhill we had never visited (even more low vis than QB day 3) with controls out and proper start intervals etc. Physically feeling a bit fatigued after yesterday but that didnt matter too much in this terrain.
A little rushed at the beginning but got focussed in time for the first control, really clean and confident in the more open area in the beginning. First control in the green lost around 2min, went in way to early but figured that out pretty quick and came back in from the track. Following this some insanely tricky controls in the rest of the low vis, super cautious but pretty clean. Mostly satisfied with my performance in here, picked off main attackpoints and focussed on compass due to the low visibility. I think I could be a bit more confident in trusting my compass but it was still quite important to be cautious as it was so hard to see. Jwoc guys lost heaps & hea...
Technical training - longer middle distance style course. Really technical map, I think I handled most of it really well, and I can be confident in my compass abilities for QB races. A couple of small time losses in the circle in certain vague areas, no controls out but definitely could refine my technique here. Overall focussed on keeping good direction and looking far ahead for features, which will be very relevant for Queen's birthday. Alternated verbalising processes with Dani from control 18-26.
18min jog in and out again.
15min jog warm up.
31:45, 5.8km middle distance race simulation. Had intended to do this Saturday but was sick with a cold (again). Was really keen to get in a good focussed session in before the races this weekend, at about 70% physical effort.
Tried my best to simulate my approach to the trial races, to focus on the technique rather than the result or running speed which is where I ran into trouble last year! Made the main techniques to be constantly reminding myself of compass, and looking ahead in the terrain which will be immensely important in the open terrain on the weekend.
Although in this training I had far fewer distractions than I would expect this weekend, I was really happy with how I focussed on executing each leg and ran very cleanly (with only a few small hesitations due to no controls out) - a good boost in confidence for the upcoming racing where I know I just need to isolate my thoughts from it being an "important race" and not force myself into taking risks w...
Longer Middle distance course in Riverhead which is quite low vis and physically taxing underfoot. Low intensity but focusing on good compass, height/contour judgement and looking ahead in the terrain.
Quite difficult in the more "green" controls without any flags, so spent extra time being sure I was in the right place. Overall I felt like I handled the navigation well in the low vis terrain, unlike the jwoc trail races here last year :)
O-week AM Middle race sim on one of the les run on, more technical maps in woodhill.
Pretty happy with how this went as a whole, very focussed the entire way and nailing the difficult control sites without any flags out. Obviously spent a little more time at the control sites than I would usually in a race because of this.
Lost around 45sec on 18 getting confused by changed tracks and overshooting. By this stage I had a small group who I had caught up to me and I effectively refocussed and found the control site and continued calmly. Compass mainly very good on most legs, apart from drifting quite wide on 12 (poor exit direction)
Overall a stable race simulation on some very technical terrain - would be happy with this level of focus and leg execution at the upcoming jwoc trial races!
