Running home from work for the first time ever, also my longest run so far. There's something I really love about traveling from one place to another by foot. It was raining, the roads were wet and icy, the last 5K were murder, but I still loved it. Again, I want to do it again!

Helsinki City Trail half marathon, my main goal for 2016. My goal was to finish under two hours and my dream was to get in to the top 10 in women's general category. Both were fulfilled. I was 9/98. in the women's general category and 77. of all 352 runners. We took part in the race together with the #suuntosummit. I was absolutely thrilled in the start. The warm-up was very good, so it felt good to get going. Paloheinä hill was fairly pleasant the first time around, so me & Stefanie both felt "was this really it?". The first 11K were really familiar to me already from a few group runs, so it was nice to go. I followed the other #suuntosummit runners, looking for a good pace while maintaining a steady heart rate. Over 180 would be too much, under 170 too little. Ben held a good, steady pace for a long time, but then I just had to pass him. At 10K the Paloheinä hill felt really high when we climbed it the second time, but a colleague shouted to me that I was #10 of all women at that point, so that really motivated me. All I had to do was hang in there - for another 11K. And I did it!!! Later I learned, that one of the women ahead of me was the women 40 category winner, so my placement was #9. I took one energy gel and made a complete mess out of it, running with sticky fingers until the end. I drank a bit at all the drinking stations and fixed my cramping leg with a couple of salted pickles at the third station. I started passing people, but the final hills almost got the best of me. They were slippery and difficult, but Francesc kept me going until the end. I was so happy when the race ended at the Laakso stadium, as I was able to do one last sprint as my family was watching and cheering. Stefanie followed closely behind and finished #10. What a great race and awesome event!!!

My second Espoo Trail Run, participated together with Jere and Teemu. Jere took off the minute we started, but Teemu was not in a race mood and ran together with me, keeping my pace up and spirits high. The pace was excellent - just a bit fast to push me to the limit, but not too fast so that I could hang in there. The track was quite difficult, lots of steep hills, small rocks and roots of the trees. I felt so exhausted many times, but yet managed to finish with a final spurt. Had a great time! My final placement in the race was 6./24. (Women 14km). Did this same race in April, this time I was 6 minutes faster and the placement was also higher (last time 10./24.) Teemu was carrying a gopro with him, thanks for the pictures!

    • Orienteering 2:59'57 Average heart rate 166 bpm, 19.13 km
Best orienteering experience ever! My main goal for this year was Jukola men's orienteering relay, together with the team Kahden Suvun Naiset, consisting of 7 orienteerers. Originally, our team was formed from my sisters, two sisters-in-law and one niece, but after some injuries and illnesses, the line-up changed to include my father, a childhood friend and a colleague, all eager to fill in. I was running the final leg of the team: 16,6km, 36 controls and time 2:59:57, just under three hours! Only a couple of small mistakes, was able to keep up with the other orienteerers so the pace was good and steady all the way - not too fast in the beginning, but not slowing down either towards the end. The first 20 controls went great, without any mistakes whatsoever. This year, the route included a "run-through" of the competition center. It really motivated me to have a fast spurt in the middle, hear the spectators cheering and even managed to see a couple of friends and relatives on the way. I could tell them that I was doing great - and was reminded to keep focus all the way and not get too excited. The final part did include some mistakes and general tiredness, but the spirit was kept high by the other orienteerers. In the end I managed to sprint the final 200 meters and pass a couple of male runners. My pink running shirt did attract attention and a couple of extra cheers, which I guess amounted to the final time being left just three seconds short of three hours. Amazing experience! Our team's result was 1317 out of 1373 teams who completed the race, my personal result (compared to the other runners on the 7th leg) was 1053/1373. All in all there were 1683 teams.

My First Trail Run!!! Had a great time, but boy, it was tough. Started off with my two sisters, but decided to run a bit faster. Found another runner with a good & steady pace, we ran together for the most of the race. Got lost once and almost tripped over at another time. In the end was so tired that neither my brain nor my eyes were working properly... But managed a nice short spurt in the end.

5K test run for determining my personal running pace for the FIRST running program, recommended by teemum. Another friend of mine agreed to run with me and keep up the pace. Couldn't have done this without her!!! For the last kilometer I started at a faster pace and left my friend behind - only to notice that the pace was a bit too fast for me as well. The last 400m were a real pain. I kept looking at only the pace (keeping it at 4'45 or less), time and distance. I had no idea what my heart rate was, which was probably a good thing as it averaged on 180. :) All in all, this was a great time!!! I was aiming for 24 minutes, so this was more than what I expected. Looking forward to systematic training and where that will take me!

Attending the Extreme Run at Vantaa with my sisters. 2x8km of running with obstacles such as climbing over scaffolding, swimming in the cold and muddy river, running through foam and icy water, climbing over cars, hay bales and stacks of car tires and crawling through pipes. We participated in the fun series, all dressed up but with a serious attitude. During the first round (1:15) all four of us ran together, taking care of the slowest one (all for one and one for all!) and cueing a lot on some obstacles. The second round (0:58) three of us continued, and it was more about running and less about waiting. By that time it was time for my little sisters to wait for me in the final uphills... But we made it and had such great fun!!!

    • Orienteering 1:25'30.9 Average heart rate 175 bpm, 8.50 km
Running the final leg of our sister's orienteering team in the Venla orienteering relay. My personal result was 492/980, in the whole race I got our placement from 723 to 620. Orienteering went well, even though I hadn't really been running in two weeks and had only been orienteering with the kids. No big mistakes, running felt nice. I think this was one of my best Venla performances ever!

Helsinki City Run 2011 Half Marathon. Clearly the best sports performance I have ever made!!! Was hoping to finish between 2.00-2.10 but managed to surprise myself. (More text in the end.) I finished 3226./10470. In the general women's series I was 299./2783. I was running with my husband for the first 17km. We agreed to start slowly: 5.50-6min/km for the first 10km. Our strong parts were always the hills: a slight pick up for the speed when going uphill, and then downhill relaxed and fast, just letting it roll freely. After 10km I was feeling good, so we picked up the speed a little. 10km - 17km we ran by average 5.20min/km. There my speed was already a bit faster than Juha's, so I told him I would start running even faster after 18km. As it turned out, my feet had a mind of their own and I started running faster already after 17km. The final two hills were killing me, but I was still able to pass a lot of people. My legs were cramping a bit, but with a stretching step I got rid of it. During the final 100m I ran as fast as I could, competed with some guy. I could feel the backs of my thighs cramping but I just kept on running, roaring as I went. My husband came later at 1.59,09, him being also very pleased on his performance. An unbelievable feeling, being able to run under 2 hours. I hadn't trained as much as I should have, but apparently in a race I could get everything out of myself and then some. I have never ever succeeded in any sporting event so well. I am so proud of myself!!!!!! I was running with my husband for the first 17km. We agreed to start slowly: 5.50-6min/km for the first 10km. Venla orienteering relay at Hyvinkää. Ran 1st leg in a team that consisted of my sisters. Made one big mistake on my way to 2nd control, managed to catch up later on. Running felt good, got to pass a lot of people on a long road part. The final track from the last control through the finishing line towards sending off the next competitor felt even a little bit too short! My placement 713/1016, our team 663/1016. http://online3.jukola.com/tulokset/fi/j2010_ve/kilpailijat/651 Recovery time 30h.

My first run after dark this autumn. The family dropped me off somewhere middle of the way home from orienteering school. The darkness amounted to some extra speed in the beginning. Half way through had a wonderful flow feeling which lasted until the end. My feet just flew, didn't have to think about running at all! Just great!!!
